06/14/25: Another huge loss for our class: My fellow “Dennis” Dennis Sullivan has passed. He was funny and warm and off-the-wall. This has been a horrific few months for our class. Please remember Dennis the next time you laugh and see something joyful. Fly high, dear Dennis.
I got the call that morning that my high school best friend passed away. Taken me some time to process it all. During our high school days Dennis and I were just about inseparable, hanging out together at almost everything. He came on vacation with our family several times to Michigan and always had a great time. He loved the theater scene and participated in the high school drama club and our youth group at St. Dominic's Catholic school. My most memorable recollection of those times is when he played Luther Billis in the play South Pacific at St Dom's and singing Honey Bun on stage. Somewhere I have a pic of him in the grass skirt and coconut bra costume. He knew how to ham up that role as well as all the roles he played throughout his stage career. Some time after high school he attended the Second City Comedy School in Chicago to hone his chops. I remember going with friends to his "graduation" show and it was the most hilarious live show. Dennis tore it up and we roared. He continued in theater throughout his life participating in various community theater groups when he could. When I returned to Cleveland in 1998 after living in FL he convinced me to come back and help with some of the shows, working the technical side (lights, sound, stage props, special effects, etc). He always knew how to drag me back into that theater genre, the backstage crew (and yes I loved to do it). I know deep down he hoped to make it big in Broadway, or even Hollywood. He would have settled for some high profile commercials. I was best man at his wedding, and he fathered two children, Amy and Patrick. Both doing well for themselves. I had lost touch with him about 5 years ago, life gets in the way, but he had reached out to me and we were able to connect again and share a few dinners, talk about our high school days, ponder our lives in some philosophical manner, as well as take in an occasional Guardians game. Dennis, I am gonna miss you. You were a shining star in my eyes so you already made the spotlight, center stage. Be at peace my friend.
I will remember Dennis with his uncombed hair, green army surplus jacket, but above all, his smile. It was a grin that usually relied something he was up to, and something you'd be laughing at along with him. Such an important part of the theater team; skilled, energetic, and dedicated to the craft. My thoughts are with his friends and family; may his memory always be a blessing to you.
